Book A Consultation

Booking a consultation is the first step to getting lighting that suits your space, your schedule and your budget. Whether you need a shopfront refresh in Sandton, a restaurant fit out in Cape Town or home lighting in Umhlanga, we’ll help you plan it properly.

Book A Consultation

Start With The Space You Have And The Result You Want

Every lighting project starts with a clear brief. A shopfront may need stronger visibility after sunset, while a restaurant might need warm levels at tables and brighter light at the counter. In homes, the brief could be about task lighting in a kitchen, soft light in a lounge, or a statement fitting in an entrance hall. When you book a consultation, bring photos, floor plans if you have them, and a short note on what is not working now.

We work from Rosebank, Johannesburg and support projects across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Midrand, Cape Town, Durban and Umhlanga. The aim is to match the lighting to the way the space is used, not just how it looks in a picture.

What To Send Before Your Consultation

A little preparation helps us give better advice from the first conversation. If you already know the size of the space, ceiling height, finishes, or the type of fittings you prefer, include that too. If your site is in a centre or a building with specific landlord rules, send those details as well. That saves time later, especially where installation hours are limited or access must be arranged in advance.

  • Photos of the space during the day and after dark
  • Approximate room sizes or site measurements in metres
  • Your opening hours or family routine
  • Any dimming, control or energy saving goals
  • Notes on existing wiring, load-shedding backup or damaged fittings

What Happens During The Consultation

The consultation is practical and focused. We look at how light enters the space, where shadows fall, which areas need emphasis and where glare could be a problem. For shopfronts, that might mean improving window visibility without washing out signage. For restaurants, it often means balancing mood with enough light for menus, staff movement and table service. For homes, we consider daily use, cleaning, maintenance and how the fittings will sit with the finishes already in place.

We also talk through control options, maintenance access and what to expect during installation. If the site is in a coastal area like Durban or Umhlanga, we will consider humidity and corrosion resistance. In Gauteng, we often take load-shedding and back-up supply into account so the lighting still performs well when power is interrupted.

From First Visit To Clear Lighting Direction

After the consultation, the next step is to turn the brief into a workable lighting direction. Depending on the project, that may include concept design, fixture specification, layout plans, control design, 3D lighting visuals, mockups and samples, and installation coordination. Some projects need a full site lighting audit first, especially where the existing setup is uneven, old or expensive to run.

  • Shopfront design for retail visibility and brand presentation
  • Restaurant design for mood, comfort and service flow
  • Home lighting design for living rooms, kitchens, passages and outdoor areas
  • Post install focusing to fine tune beam angles and highlight key features

How We Handle Site Conditions And Local Requirements

Lighting projects in South Africa often need site specific thinking. In older homes there may be limited ceiling space. In commercial spaces, municipal rules, body corporate requirements or landlord specifications can affect what can be fixed, where wiring can run and when work may be done. If a project is in a live restaurant or trading shop, we plan around trading hours so the disruption stays low.

We also think about practical matters like cleaning access, replacement parts and how a fitting will hold up over time. A good lighting plan should look right on day one and still make sense months later when the space is busy and the weather has changed. That is why we ask detailed questions before finalising any specification, instead of guessing.

Meet The Team Behind Your Consultation

Illumin8d was founded in 2011 and is led from Rosebank, Johannesburg by Mandla Ndlovu, Managing Director. The team includes Ayesha Patel, Senior Lighting Designer, Johan van Wyk, Technical Design Lead, Lerato Mokoena, Project Coordinator, Sibusiso Dlamini, Site Installation Manager, and Nokuthula Khumalo, Client Experience Lead. Each person plays a part in making sure the process is clear, practical and well managed.

That matters because lighting is not only about fittings. It is about drawings, coordination, timing, installation detail and final focus. When those parts are handled properly, the result feels considered rather than forced.

A consultation is the easiest way to avoid costly mistakes and get the lighting plan right before work starts. It gives you a proper starting point, a clear scope and a better idea of what your space needs, no guesswork.

Questions we get asked

What should I include when I book a consultation?

Send the location, the type of space, a short brief, any photos you have and note if there are landlord or body corporate rules. If you know room sizes or the times the site can be accessed, include those too.

Do you handle both new projects and upgrades to existing lighting?

Yes. We work on new shopfronts, restaurants and homes, and we also help with upgrades where the current lighting is uneven, dated or costly to run.

Can you help with sites in coastal or load-shedding affected areas?

Yes. We take local conditions into account, including humidity in coastal areas and back-up power needs in places where load-shedding affects the supply.
