The team behind every lighting brief
Illumin8d is based in Rosebank, Johannesburg and has been shaping architectural and decorative lighting since 2011. We work with clients across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Umhlanga, handling everything from concept design through to post-install focusing. The work is detailed, because good lighting has to do more than look neat on paper, it must suit the room, the use and the conditions on site.
Every project is handled by people who know the realities of South African spaces. That includes shopfront glare in the afternoon, restaurant ambience after dark, load-shedding planning, and fittings that have to cope with coastal humidity in places like Durban and Umhlanga.
- Custom lighting for shopfronts, restaurants and homes
- Local experience across inland and coastal sites
- Practical coordination from concept to installation
Mandla Ndlovu sets the direction
Mandla Ndlovu, our Managing Director, oversees the business side and the overall standard of each project. He keeps the team aligned on the brief, the budget and the end result, while making sure the lighting solution matches the client’s identity rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all answer. His approach is straightforward: plan properly, communicate clearly and never leave the final result to guesswork.
He works closely with clients who want a strong first impression at the front of house, or a calm, inviting feel at home. On site, that means checking that the design intent still holds up once ceilings, finishes and fixing points are all in front of us.
- Project direction and client alignment
- Budget awareness and practical decision-making
- Quality control from early concept to handover
Design thinking that shapes the atmosphere
Ayesha Patel, Senior Lighting Designer, leads the creative side of the work. She develops lighting concepts that balance mood, visibility and detail, whether the brief is a refined dining room, a striking shopfront or a home that needs layers of light for everyday use. Her work often starts with how people will move through the space and where the light should guide the eye.
She also prepares 3D lighting visuals, mockups and samples so clients can see how a scheme may feel before the fittings are ordered. That step saves time later, especially where ceiling heights, finishes or reflections can change the result quite a lot.
- Concept design and presentation visuals
- Lighting moods for retail, hospitality and residential spaces
- Sample review and refinement before installation
Technical detailing that keeps the scheme honest
Johan van Wyk, Technical Design Lead, turns the design intent into workable drawings and specifications. He handles fixture specification, layout plans and control design, making sure the technical side supports the look we are after. He is the one checking beam spread, mounting positions, dimming logic and whether the fittings are appropriate for the application.
His role matters just as much on a home project as it does in a busy restaurant or a retail space with strict opening hours. Good technical detail reduces site surprises and helps contractors work with confidence, especially where installation windows are short and access is limited.
- Fixture schedules and layout plans
- Control design for dimming and scene setting
- Specification support for clean installation outcomes
Keeping the site work organised
Sibusiso Dlamini, Site Installation Manager, looks after the practical side on site. He coordinates the install sequence, checks placement, and works with the team so the fittings go in where they should. His job is to keep the plan moving without losing sight of the detail, which is important when ceilings are crowded or the store needs to open on schedule.
He is also involved in installation coordination and post install focusing, which can make a big difference to the final look. Once the fittings are in, small adjustments often matter more than people expect. A few degrees here or there can change the whole balance of a room.
- Installation coordination with contractors and site teams
- Placement checks and final aiming of fittings
- Practical solutions for live sites and tight handover dates
Client communication that stays clear from start to finish
Lerato Mokoena, Project Coordinator, keeps the moving parts together and makes sure the brief, drawings and approvals stay in step. She helps manage the flow of information between the client, design team and site team, so nothing gets lost between meetings or revisions. That kind of follow-through matters when a project has multiple spaces or staged rollout dates.
Nokuthula Khumalo, Client Experience Lead, is often the steady point of contact for clients who want updates that are clear and useful. She helps make the process easier to follow and keeps the service side human, responsive and organised. People remember when a lighting team is easy to deal with, not just when the fittings look good.
- Project tracking and client updates
- Clear communication from enquiry to completion
- Support for multiple branches and phased projects
