2011: the first projects and a clear direction
Illumin8d opened its doors in 2011, working from Rosebank and taking on early projects for owners who wanted more from their lighting than a basic fitting and a switch. The first year was about listening closely, measuring properly and understanding how different spaces needed different light levels, beam spreads and control methods.
Those early shopfronts and homes set the tone for what followed. Each brief came with its own challenges, from narrow retail fronts in Johannesburg to open plan living areas that needed warm, even light without glare.

2013 to 2015: building a fuller design process
As the workload grew, the business moved beyond single-room lighting and into complete concept work. This period brought a stronger focus on layout plans, fixture specification and control design, so clients could see how each layer of light would perform before installation began.
Projects in Sandton, Midrand and Pretoria helped shape a more detailed approach. Retail clients needed signage and shopfront lighting that stood out at street level, while restaurant owners wanted atmosphere that still allowed guests to read a menu without strain.

2016 to 2018: more project coordination and on-site support
By 2016, Illumin8d was spending more time on site and less time only in the planning stage. That shift came from experience: good lighting ideas still need careful coordination once ceilings are closed, joinery is in place and other trades are working to tight deadlines.
During these years the team strengthened its installation coordination and post install focusing service. For restaurants in Cape Town and Durban, that meant getting the atmosphere right after furniture and décor were in place. For homes, it meant adjusting fittings so artwork, passageways and outdoor areas were lit properly, not just technically installed.

2019 to 2020: practical solutions for changing conditions
These years tested every part of the business. Clients wanted lighting that looked polished, but it also had to function through irregular schedules, lower energy use and changing operating hours. Illumin8d responded by focusing on planning that was both aesthetic and practical.
Shopfronts needed stronger visibility after dark. Restaurants needed control scenes that could move from daytime trading to evening service. Homes needed lighting that worked during load-shedding and still felt comfortable when backup systems came on. The team became especially attentive to controls, circuit planning and simple maintenance access.
It was also a period when the company’s regional work expanded more clearly across Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and Umhlanga.
2021 to 2023: a larger team and more specialised roles
As projects became more varied, Illumin8d grew into a team with clearly defined roles. Mandla Ndlovu led the business as Managing Director, with Ayesha Patel guiding senior lighting design, Johan van Wyk handling technical design, Lerato Mokoena coordinating projects, Sibusiso Dlamini managing site installation and Nokuthula Khumalo leading client experience.
That structure made it easier to manage multiple project types at once, from boutique restaurants to family homes and branded shopfronts. It also improved turnaround times and kept communication tighter, which matters when a site has municipal rules, landlord requirements or after-hours installation windows.

Today: a steady Johannesburg base with national reach
Today, Illumin8d remains based in Rosebank, Johannesburg, with work across South Africa for shopfronts, restaurants and homes. The business has stayed true to the same basic principle it started with in 2011: every project should suit the space, the people using it and the practical conditions it will face.
Current services include concept design, site lighting audits, fixture specification, layout plans, control design, shopfront design, restaurant design, home lighting design, 3D lighting visuals, mockups and samples, installation coordination and post install focusing. Whether the brief is in Umhlanga, Pretoria or Cape Town, the goal is still the same, good light in the right place with fewer surprises on site.
